Jimmy Chang Hot Tuna
Born of the sun dappled coastal shore lines of Western Australia, Jimmy Chang produced music with friends in a number of local bands before packing up and moving to Melbourne in 2014 to forge out Jimmy Chang Hot Tuna on any night of the week. Following two self released cassettes (Zealous Chang and Changwave), Jimmy Chang is set to release his new EP, Original Changster, this March.
Original Changster continues Jimmy’s exploration of dreamy, down-tempo 80s pop, modern culture, ideas and iconography with an ironic, tongue in cheek twist. The one-man music-making machine on record, produces, writes, records and plays everything, with the exception of drums on tracks 2-5, delivered to your ears by Will Holden (Doona Waves).
Moving more toward the analog world since Changwave, Jimmy’s home studio now features an impressive collection of old synths, samplers, outboard effects and a highly regarded, Roland 707, all adding to the woozy, laid back psych-pop and airy productions of Original Changster. Jimmy’s decidedly stoned sound is liberating in a world full of structure.
With backing bands on both sides of the continent, Jimmy Chang Hot Tuna’s current incarnation on the East Coast includes Ash Briody (The Beegles) on bass, Will Holden on drums, and Justin Manzano on synth.
This new EP, with equal helpings of pop and chillwave is lethargic and catchy as hell to boot.
