Candy is the solo moniker of Calum Newton, started in 2015 as a bedroom project, this year has seen Newton turn the once bedroom project into a live band along with the release of his debut record, Under The Weather.
Recorded, mixed and mastered in his bedroom over the past twelve months, Under the Weather recounts a transformative period of Newton’s life. Finding himself between projects and at a musical crossroads the record takes you into the mind of an early 20’s creative grappling with insecurities and anxieties, trying to land his feet.
The album plays out in two halves; the first half giving an insight to the stress and anxiety that homelessness and a lack of clear direction can instil, while the second half building towards a more hopeful positive future.
Opening cut,’Validation’ struggles with approval, ‘Apartment in the City’ elucidates the difficulty of being stuck in your own head. “Thankful” details the way in which personal relationships suffer under the strain of personal circumstance and sonically showcases another side to Candy, leaden with arpeggiating synths over a dreamy soundscape and rhythmic bass-line.
The record shifts gears from the rollicking, ‘Hiding from the Sun’ into the plodding ‘No Sleep Lullaby’ both of which feel reminiscent of the contradictory nature of an anxious mind. Through its deadpan delivery and ‘Head on the Door’-esque synth line, ‘Destroy My Body’ alludes to the reliance on outside influence to create temporary fixes. ‘Parted Ways’ has its roots firmly placed in post-punk of the 80s and tells of a wilful severance of ties. The reverb leaden ‘Uneasy’ breezes by, despite highlighting the anxiety of walking past total strangers and feeling a judgmental gaze whether or not there’s any reason to.
In the final chapter of the record, ‘Simple Life’ pedals with awkward, plucked chords punctuated by shuffling percussion as Newton sings of how his current situation is crushing him slowly; “the weight of it all is breaking my back, and I’m not sure that it’s worth it”. As downtrodden as the subject matter of Under the Weather is, it closes on with optimism on the slow-burning ‘Get Healthy’. Arpeggiating synths laid over divine chords swell with rolling, crashing drums into a dissonant crescendo as Newton declares that he will get beyond the limitations of his current position.
